Day van conversion with pop top?

Already have a t5 camper but our family is growing and probably need to get a proper seat to house the extra baby, the basic rock and roll was fine for oldest as he rode up front in the 3 front seats. It’s mileage is also creeping up along with its 2008 age and it could probably do with a respray soon.

We obviously know how we use our current van, we use the hob but have never used the fridge (it was broken when we bought it and realised it was too small and akward to be useful so stuck with a basic large fabric coolbag - this is much more effective for storage as you put things in and out from the top), and we’ve never used the sink because who in there right mind would wash up inside a tiny van, always taken out with a wash up bowl and kettle of water. We do a lot of wild camping with this basic set up, up to 10 days on the go and are happy to go without power, as no heater or solar panels as what’s the point if the fridge is too small to be useful, not even sure the leisure battery holds a charge but never needed it really.

Problem is husband is 6’6”, and we are thinking maybe 6 seater day van with full width bed rib bed is a better option given how we use it, just buy a stove for the table. We have never used the pop top for sleeping as it’s too much like camping and noisy/light. So the full width bed would allow 3 fortunately very skinny people on the bed and a front bunk for the youngest.

Does this sound like a crazy idea to convert ideally a LWB T6 to a 6 seater with blinds and pop top, insulation and flooring, maybe some lighter points for charger in back. We had been looking for maybe fridge and stove cupboard unit without sink that could go in the front and I guess opt for a drawer fridge but it seems they all have the pointless sink, if I ever wanted to drain something I always just poured it out through the sliding window.

As husband is so tall we have always needed the pop top when not sleeping and then we close it up for our quiet night, you obviously can’t sit up and eat without a pop top at that height.

What would be the best base vehicle spec to do this with and is it wasting money?! Air con is a requirement, we could be flexible with SWB/LWB, and in an ideal world we’d have a rear tailgate. They’re just so expensive to purchase that I don’t want to feel like we are literally wasting money, but overall we feel like a VW van is a really great multi purpose everything vehicle (for a few years it was our only vehicle) and we don’t want to lose the flexibility of not having one. The 4k to change to a rib bed on our existing battered aging thing does not sound sensible given for the right people it’s a perfectly great conversion and was done professionally albeit a number of years ago now when people worried less about child safety haha.

We obviously do love the appeal of a battered van, I mean it’s not dented or anything but it’s so great not to worry about the odd scratch and when you are wild camping in Scotland vehicles squeeze into tight spots.

If your happy with what you’ve got then stick with it. Money saved in the long run and no hefty upfront cost.

No the issue is we won’t be happy with current vehicle once second child comes along, we can’t seat 2 child seats in our current vehicle as back seat isn’t suitable it’s not even deep enough for a crappy child car seat, and front passenger seats aren’t wide enough for two child car seats, and we can’t have all adults and children in a sleeping arrangement with the pop top down which is how we use it at the moment but only 1 child. This is why I am asking about suitable base vehicles to look for. Also we’d prefer to have a euro6 vehicle rather than our old diesel which I don’t think can even go inside the m25 now or at least soon won’t be able to.

Do you know if rib bed is the only supplier of these seats, I have seen that there are some other conversion companies for instance that use a rib type bed in terms of how it folds out (see funkydubz conversions for instance) and also has isofix but isn’t the rib bed brand, but I can only find rib beds online as the rest are rock and roll. Also did hear that rib seats are higher off the floor which would be a general issue for any tall person moving around in the vehicle.

Just wondering if there are other more cost effective bed alternatives out there that fold out like a rib bed but can have isofix but are not as high off the floor.

Can't help with that I'm afraid. I've gone for an M1 tested rock and roll with isofix. RIB112 would have been nice but a bit out of my budget.

This is the bed I’m talking about, it can’t be a rib because it’s got the head rests that get removed, what brand is it?

Yes I think that’s also our issue with our current rock and roll bed it’s just so uncomfortable to sit on for long distance, which to date hasn’t been a problem because we have all 3 of us up in the front! Maybe some of the new rock and rolls are more comfortable, but ours seems all very straight & the seat depth is too shallow so it feels like there’s no leg support.

Sure a company called Vulcan do a bed like that.
Have you not thought of a estate and a caravan?
Our old 6berth was so much more practical than a camper and bigger. Also didn’t have to pack everything away when we wanted got the beach/village etc.
so had the perfect day van when we had pitched up.

Are you happy mechanically with the van - you don't say how many miles you've covered.

Because with the best will in the world a Euro6 is not going to be as robust as your current van and it may be worth thinking of you can change the bed in your current one?

If you do invest in something new what's your plan when youngster #2 grows too big for a cab bunk?

We’ve had no issue with our current camper so far but only had it 4 years, but it’s now got 120k on the clock (40k added by us), had a new timing belt for £250 as broke whilst in France luckily near to a French garage that was amazing so didn’t even miss our ferry as was same day delivery on the part! Otherwise it’s just been the servicing and new tyres, we’ve never even paid for overseas breakdown cover we have been that confident in it, so for 16k it has seemed a great purchase to date. Like I say though the bodywork and alloys are not looking great now though although no terrible rust setting in, but that will be expensive if we do have to respray at some point, alloys look to have been coated in something grey which is slowly flaking off.

Surprised a newer van is less reliable, a shame to hear but I did wonder as this has been a very cost effective vehicle so far, albeit we could of spent some money replacing the pointless fridge and leisure battery.

We do not want a caravan or other motorhome, that has been our debate more recently as we do have the funds available to buy something very nice if we wanted but we are very sensible with our money and don’t like spending on a single luxury when we still go on other expensive holidays like skiing or the other side of the world.

We love wild camping too much and need something discrete.

When youngster 2 grows too big that won’t probably happen for 10 years so plenty of time to figure it out, but I guess eventually we could still resort to the pop top which we will need anyway due to tall people.

I think you are saying you've currently got a typical camper setup in a SWB van with a pop-top..

It sounds like you'd be better off with a Kombi van that has a triple rear seat (ISOFIX version) and two Captains seats up front - that would make it a five seater. Depending on the age of your kids, you could have a cab bunk for the little'un and / or have them sleep in the pop-top. Then I'd fit a full-width Kombi bed with slide-out system that would hold your coolbox, amongst other things. That way all seats are able to cater for the kids, you aren't wasting space with a fridge nor cooker, and any cooking could be done on the slide-out drawer.
A tailgate retrofit is doable (which will provide shelter when cooking, but so will a barn-door event tent).

You could use your existing vehicle for this - granted, you'd have to remove and sell the kitchenette and Rib bed, then buy the Kombi 3-seater, passenger captain seat and slide-out system - or sell it and buy a high-top van which will negate the need for the pop-top..
