CXEB Rebuild

So I’ve recently acquired a 2017 CXEB engined T6 with a blown turbo and wet exhaust manifold ports (all 4) so I’ve pulled the engine and it’s gone to an engineering firm who are going to pull it apart this / next week and let me know the outcome but assuming it’ll have a full refresh.

I’m going for a new bi-turbo, new cambelt, new water pump, darkside EGR and cooler delete, new clutch, new oil cooler

Injectors are being sent away and tested / cleaned

Adblue has been mapped out and DPF has been gutted already.

Is there anything else I should be considering doing whilst the engine is in bits and out of the van?

It’ll obviously have new oil, filters etc IMG_4702.webp

What sort of miles has the engine done?
Maybe add things like crankshaft seals, HPFP etc, that could give issues at some point (based only on what issues others have had on the forum)

Check for compression.

And measure the piston and bores for wear.

.

There are legal implications with AdBlue and DPF deletes on UK roads.

It will fail a proper mot emissions test without the DPF.

But the main thing will be the block and pistons worn... As per the VW TPI.

And turbo failure around 130k ish.

The engine has done 140k and is being fully gone through by the engineering firm so they’ll take care of all of that for me 💪🏼

Good shout on HPFP 👍

Van has passed for past 4 years with Adblue and DPF delete, it still has cat so hopefully it’ll continue to be fine 🤞

That’s what seems to have happened to mine 🫣new / refurbished turbos will be on order. Will send to Darkside to get sorted.

I’m currently having a CXEB engine rebuild, and as a precautionary measure I took the injectors in to be cleaned and tested. Long story short but all 4 failed the tests for one reason or another…. They can get them new for £225+vat but I’ve seen PF jones do fully reconditioned units for £144 inc vat

Is there any reason I shouldn’t go for reconditioned units as both have 12 months warranty?

Also worth changing the HPFP at the same time to futureproof? Seems a big job to get to HPFP after engine is back in (inlet manifold, cambelt, pulleys off etc off to get to it)

Thanks in advance 👊🏻

While that saving is quite substantial, I’ve read a few posts where people have changed injectors which then went on to cause all manner of problems, only to have to return to the originals to resolve the problem.

100% change the HPFP while the engine is out, it’s a front end strip down to get anywhere near it with the engine fitted.

For that price you need to ask what you are getting, injectors, pumps and valves should be overhauled in a clean room as the operating clearances are mere microns, they then need to pass a stringent test procedure.
For £144 inc VAT I suspect the outcome won’t be good.
A failed injector can bore wash the cylinder, dilute lube oil and the leak oil will distribute debris through the fuel system.
In the auto world definitely not worth considering in my opinion.

Engine block came back today from overhaul, plus new hpfp, cam belt, water pump and pulley kit, new crank sensor, main seal 🫶🏻

Now to start rebuilding what I took apart…. IMG_4925.webp

What was found with the engine
What work was required to get it back into good health?

Did they ship a rebuilt engine without blanking off open ports and hoses?

Being honest not a lot, I bought the van from the previous owner with the engine already out, but he assured me that it never used much oil “around 600ml per 10,000 miles between services”

The reason it was out was that the bi-turbo unit had gone, and it was easier to replace taking the engine out which is when they found oil in the exhaust ports but engine builder said that he measured, checked and couldn’t see any issues

Engine builders checked for any signs of damage on the bores and there was none, so had new piston rings etc.

No I collected from them in the back of my van.

Just another thought - How was the DMF ? I have seen a number of posts on the forum of DMFs going bad, so could be worth checking as well if not already.

How are you progressing with the engine refit?
Engine is back in and done 2500miles since, all seems to be behaving- I had a sporadic engine light on which turned out to be a knock sensor had come unplugged (royal pain in the arse to get to)

And a small oil leak from somewhere. I’ve actually been out and been working on it today to try and find oil leak / weep but can’t find much so have cleaned / de-greased so I can hopefully spot it easier

All back together now though 💪🏼

I replace the DMF and clutch whilst it was all out, false economy to not whilst it’s out and on the floor

Hi. Just on the rebuild with all this myself now on cxha. I can see your rear crankcase seal (dmf side) has been replaced to a ally housing as opposed to the original plastic seal housing. I am wondering if you are aware if the ally housing sits flush to the engine block? The original plastic housing is flush and oring outer seal sits flat against the block but the new victor reinz seal appears to not sit flush to block as there are stepped holes where bolts fasten. Interested to see if you had any experience with this or any more close up pictures to share possibly, thank you
