This is a mega lazy way of finding this out, but I know that I'll get a good answer and lots of examples... :p

What do I need to convert this string of lights from the 3 x 1.5V AA battery holder to a USB @ 5V?

Can you tell if the AA batteries are in series or in parallel ?
Put another way, can you measure the output voltage of the battery pack ?

I would use any USB type A lead.
Cut it and connect power wires straight to your string of lights. I have used dozens of 5V DC power supplies on variety of home gadgets which by design were using 3 x 1.5V AA/AAA batteries.

Agreed. A new AA battery puts out about 1.6v.
3 x 1.6v = 4.8v which is close enough to 5v to mean you can just use a standard USB 5v power supply.
