Control Unit

Can somebody give me some advice and feedback on a suitable control unit for the electrical install for my T6. I was going to use a Sargent power unit but having spoken to the technical department they tell me their units are not compatible with smart alternators which of course I have being a T6 model. Interested to hear what others have installed and your thoughts. Thanks

I worked out that I didn’t need a control unit in our T6 camper conversion. We used individual components e.g a DC-DC for charging on the move, a standard battery charger when on hook-up, and a separate controller for solar. I added a volt meter to track the state of the leisure battery.

What do you want the control unit to do for you ?

Pete

Hi Pete, I thought the advantage of using a control unit would be to condense all the components and fuel holders into one tidy unit.

happy to use separate units, but do you find it takes up a lot of space?

Howard

Well the DC-DC converter sits under the drivers seat with the leisure battery. The EHU charger is hidden in the depths of the wardrobe unit, as is the solar charger unit. Switches/display etc are on the side of the wardrobe unit.

There were a few things that put me off a single control unit. Firstly, it was too inflexible i.e. I wanted to add another switch, display or function, then it could be difficult. Secondly, there are quite a few threads on here with people asking about how their control unit works, and why it isn’t doing what they expected. Thirdly, all my eggs could be in one basket, and if it failed, then everything might stop working.

That’s just me though. I guess I know what we have fitted, and there is no black box to worry about (well not too many anyway !)

My converter uses a Sargent box for all the internal electrics (both mains and 12v) and the built in mains charger powers everything when on hook up and keeps the batteries charged.
For battery charging when on the move they installed a Sterling under the drivers seat and disabled the Sargent split charge.
