Canbus issues with android head unit

Hi everyone, a couple of months ago I installed a new android head unit in my t5.1 (I know this is a T6 forum but i've been looking for a solution for months now, so I hope you guys could maybe help me) but I've had issues since the beginning. The T5.1 won't work with any CANBUS radio for some reason. I've tried the same head unit in my Polo and it works flawlessly. The biggest issues are that the head unit doesn't turn on via canbus, gives no parking sensor information ect. It also gives 2 canbus errors when I connect my VCDS (00470 & 01336, see image) both related to electrical faults.

The weird thing is that the T5.1 came with a Pioneer Avic F9310BT from the dealer, which also worked via canbus since there is no switched 12v wire on the quadlock radio plug and the parking sensors are OEM but the pioneer still gives a visualisation of that. I tried so many different things, like using the pioneer canbus adapter etc. But i couldn't figure it out. Has it got something to do with the coding? The T5.1 is long out of warranty and I'm not planning on spending hundreds of euros to have a VW dealer just look at it.

I hope some of you guys can help!IMG_0023.JPG

Could it be that I blew a fuse on the canbus system? Every time I connect the canbus decoder for the android head unit I hear clicking from the dashboard like some sort of relais...

Which CAN-BUS did you connect to?
Looks to me like bad connection.
Have you got any photos of your wiring?

Also what's your battery like as I've had it before with one van a similar fault on can bus and it was the battery.

That said have you checked (obviously with the battery disconnected that you don't have any short circuits between can hi and can low for each can network and obviously no shorts between networks?

Where are you located matey

I connected to the regular Canbus wires on the quad lock radio plug. I don't have any photos for now though. I checked the wiring and everything seems to match (apart from the 12v switched wire that isn't present). Is there any way I can check for canbus shorts?

The battery is kinda bad, but should that explain why the old head unit works with canbus and the new one doesn't? How do I measure short circuits on the canbus? just the probes on the Hi and Lo end on the same plug?

Oh and I'm located in the Netherlands...

This is different make of a vehicle
but easily explaines CAN bus network principles.
Just watch it and it should help you with diagnostics.

I think I found the issue. The driver side door (left door since I'm from the Netherlands) doesn't register as open when opened (interior lights don't turn on and the van locks itself after a minute because it hasn't registered that a door was opened. This leads me to believe that there is a fault in the wiring there causing the canbus to go in single wire mode. The android head unit only uses the high signal, so if that signal is not active due to the single wire mode it explains the problems.

Are there any fuses in the canbus system that can break? I'm going to check the wiring loom in the door next week. If there is a wire that is broken, can I solder that back together? Or is it better to replace the entire door wiring loom since canbus is data and not just 12v power?

thanks for all the help so far guys! I really really appreciate the effort!

This could easily be a red herring and a door switch not functioning causing the lights not to come on.

Does VCDS see any of the door module. My first place to check would be the rubber duct from the door to the chassis common for wires to break there it unplugs from the chassis wlso easy to check. If you use heat shrink soldering the wire if it is broken is fine.

Thanks! I will check for that this week. So a faulty door wiring loom could be the culprit of all my issues? Oh how I love my old ‘71 Opel GT where the most technological thing is the dashboard light dimming switch

Yes it is possible because shorting the canbus wires out can interfere with the rest of the canbus network.

It woukd explain the comfort canbus issue. Usually there is 3 canbus networks. Infotainment, Powertrain and Comfort that all link together in the gateway.
