I’ve been working on my van this week. I pulled up the floor but one of the bolts for the lashing point is knackered. Rusted, rounded off you name it.

My question can I cut the bracket or welded nut from the underside of the van and replace it with a rivet nut?IMG_9544.jpeg

Drill off the head of the bolt and from under the van use some pliers/mole grips to turn the thread up into the van until you can grab it from inside. When you release the tension by drilling the head off the threaded part may well be OK to turn.

Drill the head off in the van, drill the pop rivets out. In the vice and get the bolt remnants out pop rivet back in. Simples
Pop rivets are in what looks like box section. I don’t think I’d be able to get the rear ends out.

The sad truth is that no garage in the world would try and recover the pop rivet tails, they would just bang new ones in.
It's always different when its your own van. And if your an aircraft engineer doing a skin repair, then your supposed to recover all the rivet tails. Unless your Boeing these days I guess.
May well be easy to get the thread out when you drill the head off.

I have drilled lots of rivets out of a caterham chassis - squirt of waxoil to stop them rattling! JD

Top tip - use an old pop rivet mandrel to knock the pip out of the centre then you can drill the ally bit out of the centre without the drill running off.
