Hope this wasn’t a member. but why would they want the Fiat 500 not what was parked next to it?

Because the Fiat 500 was the same colour and spec as the smashed one that they want to repair.
That's very likely to be the situation, IMO.

Sadly this is all too common. No fear as the police will never catch them or even investigate these crimes. The UK is turning more into a lawless country every day. Mrs was in a charity shop the other day and two youths walled in picked up all the crockery and walked out. Woman in the shop said it happens every week. I despair
