Air suspension

Hi All,

I just wanted everyone’s input regarding all types of air suspension for myself and anyone in the future that is looking to get “bagged”. I’m currently booked in to have a full air system installed and I was just wondering if anyone wants to share their thoughts or reviews of any air suspension set up’s they have. Ride quality, problems, things to look out for, things you wish you had, how low etc...

I've also found that unless you live in the north of the watford gap air suspension specialists are few and far between on the south coast!

Also if anyone wants to add any experiences they have had with companies who fit and supply that would be great!
Trust me I’ve spoken with a fair few.

I didn’t want to jump in on the VB air discussion as that is solely for the VB. I’m talking all types of air fitted to a Transporter. I will add my experience and learning curves as I go through this process.

And also front end of august I will have a SoLow suspension set up for a T32 available if anyone is interested... it’s covered under a 1000 miles can’t remember exactly.

I've been looking to to have Air setup and was looking at going to AR Tuning in Morecombe, a fair trek as like you im on the south coast.

I was quite prepared to travel having spoke to them, and seen a setup they had installed on an 18 plate T6.

Have now found through recommendation some where in Basingstoke to fit.

Have found threads on here invaluable in researching, as we have only had van a couple of months (so a little green)

Hopefully Airlift to be fitted.

Ill keep updated on progress :)

I have called in and chatted to the guys at AR Tuning in Morecambe. Seemed a decent place.

It would help if you gave the reasons and thoughts as to why you want to go with air suspension? Then people can offer comments / opinions that would be helpful.

I ran Airlift and Accuair in a previous car (Golf, not Transporter).

I'd get it again in a Transporter, but the sheer cost is putting me off. I managed to source the kit (E-level, twin comps, Performance struts etc) for under £2k and fitted it myself. But the ABP kit from Plush is north of £4k new, and pretty rarely comes up for sale (from what I've seen).

That sounds great! Keep us posted. Is it JLP automotive your going to? If so then you will be in capable hands so I hear.

I want a slammed van! every van with the stance I want has air suspension. I’ve tried to get down on the SoLow’s but when you start running the back with adjuster deletes it’s not a nice experience.

I also want the flexibility. Able to run it at a high at the camp sites, rolling low on motorways, slammed down when parked and set at a decent height for some of these awful roads we have down here.

just really after some info from others who have run or have experience with air. reliability, ride and anything else that anyone has experienced.

Yes, air is good to lift up at camp sites, but I've not been on a camp site that needed it, others may differ.
It does look good when aired out and sat on the arches. Most of the time it will look like a 'normal' lowered van, especially to others.
As for reliability, not as reliable as coilovers or standard suspension. So many more things to go wrong. I had a small hole in one of me bags. Compressors are a bit noisy and irritating for me, unless you spend en extra lump on the tanks with compressors inside.
Ride is decent, but not as good as coilovers.
If you have TPMS is will set a warning every time you go out in the van. To the point where you will start to ignore it.

Just a few points that spring to my mind.

JPL is prob who your talking about! I also had a conversation with another who came out a little more expensive and just a little to far for me if I get any problems. I was lucky to find a hidden gem who deal in only transporters only half hour away!!!

what setup did you go for?
I've gone for:

SoLow air suspension
Twin 444s Viair
4 gallon seamless
Airlift 3P management
3/8 lines
Hub mods and arch mods
all underslung.

I've Had to do some research and loads of asking people for info on the social sites. That’s why I wanted to start a little something here to give a little back as everyone has been so helpful with lots of other aspects

I did wonder about the whole reliability and things to go wrong. Thanks for the info.

Im pretty used to a bit of a firmer ride as I’m nearly on the bottom of those SoLow’s.Running a 40 profile may have something to do with it as well

what’s TPMS??

It is JPL, have exchanged a few messages, so hopefully arranging an appointment soon to go through everything.
All a learning curve but have this setup as a starting point
ABP Bilstein air suspension.
Twin Viair 444c
Airlift 3P management system.
3/8 lines.

Seriously interested in the Solow air suspension for me new van which I collect tomorrow and am considering it myself but mine would be a diy installation:eek: Can’t help but get my hands dirty. Just can’t find anything on YouTube relating to a detailed Transporter install, I know all the basics but would love to see a FULL video

Wow your brave!! Transporter HQ have a video when they “bagged” the T6.1. If you have one of those lifts should be ok.. maybe the driveway is a different story

if you can wait I’ll get under it and get some pictures for you. It looks like the time consuming bit is the routing of the pipes under the van.
