Air conditioning not working

Checked again this morning with ignition on only. 18 degrees and 2 bar.

If yours is normal then mine is running with 50 percent pressure so looking most likely I do have a slow leak from somewhere.

This might explain why it worked fine after being regassed a few months ago.

They did a pressure check at the time before refilling which came back OK but if it takes a few months to lose pressure maybe the 5 or 10 minute check they did wouldn't detect it.

I've seen some leak sealing regas/refil options on the net but don't fancy putting that in the system in case it causes other problems down the line.

Think I just need to get it booked in somewhere to look at. Anyone any suggestions in the Hull area other than main dealers?

No sense having a regular regas again if it's just going to do the same in a few months.

Not sure how they were checking for leaks but they obviously didn’t find it.
There are units like this that can locate the gas leak, others are available; 0563 3163 | Testo 438A, CFCs, HCFCs, HFCs, R134a, R-22, R-404A, R-410A, R-507 Handheld Refrigerant Leak Detector | RS Components
There are also units that detect ultrasound, very sensitive to any leaking gaseous fluid, others are available; FS.LKC.001(-01) | SDT Ultrasound Solutions LEAKChecker Ultrasonic Leak Detector, 160x128 Display | RS Components
I’m certainly not suggesting you buy them, just indicating that it’s a specialist field and some might be better at it than others!
 
I'm going to try and find a local garage with some decent equipment like mentioned above and check properly for leaks. Hopefully they'll find it without too much trouble.

Wondering if this is a chicken-egg dilemma - as there is not enough pressure (=heat) there is no need to turn the fan on.

Just looked into my data - the fan turned off even at MAX COLD though van speed was then 50 mph thus enough airflow. Just saying that the logic probably is more complicated than simply wired into temperature knob. As there isn't (available as data or even sensor) refrigerant temperature, the logic just might take benefit of the pressure as it has a relationship with generated heat.

Some background for the pressure data:
The AC was serviced in February- had been run 2 years 10 months (48000 km)​
Refrigerant R134a drained - 500g. Refill 600 g. Vacuum tested 20 mins.​
The loss was said to be typical for Transporters.​
 
My May 2016 van has never had an AC service, AC has always been running over all 48000 miles (76800Km), still runs very cold and adequately cools my van in strong sun at ambient 30 deg C with re-circulation on fan set point 2. Very well insulated campervan.

Nope not yet, did look for somewhere local to Hull at the time but nowhere obvious to take it, and life has since got in the way! Need to get my finger out and get it sorted.....

best to run the A/c at least once a week to keep the seals oiled up and stop the leakages

for cooling or dehum from condensation
 
Please post full VCDS Auto-Scan and blockmap of 08-Auto HVAC so that we can see what's available

How-to-blockmap:

VCDS -> Applications -> Controller Channel Map ->

Tick/fill boxes as above and hit Go

VCDS Flashes screens for a moment (when finished hit "Done, Go Back") and there will be file blockmap-08-... in folder C:\Ross-Tech\VCDS\Logs\....


Actually I would like to have a few "blockmaps" with AC set to 20C (or max cool), blower at (minimum) 2 - just keep the settings.

Just hit "Go" for each step below - may take it for a drive after step 3.

1) Ignition ON - engine off​
2) Engine on tick over - 30 seconds after start up​
3) At 1 minute​
4) At 5 minutes​
5) At 10 minutes​
6) At 15 minutes​
7) At 20 minutes​

Each of them will be in a separate blockmap-08 -file.


I’m getting no file created when I’m doing this.

Can anyone tell me what I’m doing wrong?

I have an (old?) genuine HEX + CAN VCDS cable. I’ve done quite a lot of stuff with it in the pass so pretty sure it’s not the cable.

Sorry to clutter the thread. Seems the above is something to do with UDS.

I did manage to grab some readings.

Inside temperature of 22.2c. Don’t think so. It was fecking freezing this morning!!

Any ideas please?

Car was running but only for a few minutes. Temp on A/c set to 26c

The controller does not use measurement blocks - instead all data (for this controller) is available under Advanced measurement values.

I have posted some results using Advanced Measurement Values above.

However I can only measure 12 values at a time.

Which ones would be useful as per your second post on this thread (reading the values at different times of the day)

I guess it depends... what you need... Quite a few to start with were mentioned in posts #13, #19 - just need strip some of them to make them fit into 12 values available.




A huge advantage of the newer cables HEX-V2 and HEX-NET is that they are capable of making full recordings of all 110+ data values (a blockmap of controller 08) over a longer time. E.g. as below collecting 220 blockmaps (each approx. 8 seconds) = 30 minute recording with just one "Go". All that just to get started - to see what data is stuck, alive, or plausible.

Thanks. Didn’t know my cable was out of date. Thinking about it I think it’s about 18 years old, is that possible!!

It’s the one with unlimited VINS which makes it useful but will consider an upgrade.
