Advice on fitting a rear spoiler

Looks awesome where did you get the spoiler..?
I’ve been having a look about, not many do them painted.

I had barn door spoilers on my previous van. I painted them myself and fitted them myself - they both came off even after roughing the spoiler and bodywork.

I fitted a tailgate spoiler to my current van. I painted it myself, drilled holes and bolted it to the tailgate and went with sikaflex too.

That b*****d is never coming off :D ;)

Transporter HQ.

They do the popular colours...

Them self fit or get a body shop to stick it on.

My sportline has factory fit, bonded and bolted.

The BUS is bonded only.... So let's hope it stays on.

I did key they spoiler, but not the bodywork.... Just glass cleaner.

Thanks dude.. I'll take a look, think I seen them on Vantech too.. I’ll have a go at putting it on.. quite handy.. I think so anyway

I cleaned the paint surface with alcohol wipes, then sikaflex’d mine on. I luckily discovered a few months later when cleaning the van that the corners looked like they had slightly lifted. So I wiggled the spoiler and it was practically coming off - only held on by a few blobs gripping. I removed it easily by just giving it a tug - really lucky, we were going to go down the motorway that weekend and it may have flown off!

It seems all of the sikaflex bonded to the van paint just fine, but the bond to the paint on the underside of the spoiler did not last, so much so, when I removed it, there was no sikaflex stuck to the spoiler! I took no chances and this time, drilled the skin of the roof, rust proof pain in the hole / on the drilled area. When that dried I squirted sikaflex in the holes, put rubber washers on the otherside of the drilled skin and bolted that sucker on.

Had I sikaflex and bolted it, maybe the bond might have lasted longer, but I definitely will not be trusting just glueing again. Someone could have had a 70mph spoiler flying at them on the motorway and potentially causing an accident!
I'm new to the forum having just bought my first van yesterday. Lovely Caravelle and the guy selling was very reluctant to be getting rid of it but as he was showing me around he closed the rear door and the spoiler didn't come down with the door - just stayed at 90 degrees. He'd had the van for 6 years and it had the spoiler on it when he got it - never had an issue with it - I felt very lucky that he was there and he was very surprised - I can't imagine the damage it might have caused travelling back down the motor at 60mph!! There are two screw holes at either end of the spoiler so I am guessing that it makes sense to at least do the above as a bare minimum! Can't beleive that all the rear spoilers out there are simply held down by glue!!

They are cars out that have parts of their chassis glued together.
Clean both surfaces and stick it back on - better then having water in the van later.

What did you think of the quality of this one? Have you got any photos?
Hey bud..

Yeh no worries… sealed it with CT-1

Oh my days! Just realised that was July ‘24

Hasn’t moved, impressed with it when I received it, chose a good day for the weather to fit it & not drive for pretty much 24 hours.
Got a Skyline roof fitted too, doesn’t affect it at all with the tailgate up.. all good.

That looks good!

I bought a second hand one on eBay in indium grey but it was a fibre glass one and one of the corners had cracked in the post, I fixed it and stuck it on but it’s not a great quality one and the crack has come back so want to get a better quality one

Cheers bud.

I paid extra to have it painted the same colour as the van so it was a case of just fitting it.. worked out better that way I felt.

Shame about yours cracking again.. perhaps just bite the bullet & get a new one 👌🏻 won’t have no worries then..

That’s the plan 👍
