275/40/20 on front wheels

Hi guys, its always been an interesting topic selecting tyres. I can only give you my own account of Tyre choices, and up to now they have served me really well. I bought them in May 2021 and would stay with the same tyre size.

I ended up going for 265/40/20, front and back. No rear offset or spaces used, mounted on Land Rover Discovery 511's with an 8.5 J. 1st pair were Hankook Ventus S1 Evo3 for the rear and the 2nd pair were Goodyear Eagle Sport M&S up front. I say M&S - they look like a normal high speed tread pattern really but with additional micro grooves. I've run both combinations on the front and back but the Goodyear has an excellent rim protector so they stay on the front. Both tyres offer rim protection as the side walls are not flat to the alloys.

Cosmetically they look nice but performance has been brilliant. Mine's a T30 102 so it's bit of a slug setting off but it stops and corners well even when loaded up. Yes slightly noisier than the standard wheels and definitely heavier on the steering, but because I'm not that lead-footed anymore, I'm getting 40-45 mpg on runs and they've done approx' 11,000 miles now. Like a few on here, I don't run these all year round. I've got the original Claytons with Semperit VanGrip 2's up front for winter - another good tyre in my opinion. Anyway, I hope it helps with the decision making. Oddly, only the O/S on full right hand lock on certain cambers makes contact with the inner arch protector. There's never any contact on the left hand lock ?? One other thing to note is that the speedo is accurate up to 50mph but then runs slower than the GPS states as you'd expect.

I'll try and load some pics to give you an idea. Mines on B12's and lowered 50mm. I've had some time away from the Forum in the last year so it might not happen straight away.

For anyone mildly interested, here's what 275 40 and 245 45 Uniroyal Rainsports on 8.5 x 20'' rims look like. Rears are a little balloony. Fronts are a little stretched. 30mm width makes a large difference on how the tyre sits on the rim. If I were buying again, not sure what I'd choose, maybe leave the front as is and reconsider the rear. Don't think I'd go 245 on the rear nor 275 again. A 245 on the rear would give the impression of a far larger arch gap. At least with the 275 I'm far less likely to kerb the wheel.

FYI the rear also has a 15mm spacer

I commented on this thread earlier up as had 275 40s on the front and wanted to change to 245 45's, I've now done this (all round not just front) and can honestly say the van feels so much better, steering feels like a totally different van, wish I had done it earlier, looks loads better too on the rims I had.

I’ve got 275/40/20 fitted all round on my Leighton LV2’s and need to replace. Can someone advise what sizes I should go for? I get a bit of rubbing on the front currently on full lock as it’s an Allseasons camper so on lowering springs. Just trying to get my head round the correct sizes that I should be running.

I feel and hear your pain, Eddie is lowered 50mm, I removed my 20's with 275/35/20 and replaced with 18's - 255/50/18's - improved ride comfort and not too bad aesthetically as well I think. 20's on top, 18's underneath.

I have LV1 and run 245/45/20 front with 275/40/20 rear. The tyre 'bulge'-to-wheel-rim looks the same both front and rear. The circumference is same front to rear too, which is important for me as I have a 4Mo.

Depends if the van a T28/T30 or T32 as load rating is important. 101 for T28/T30 and 103 for T32. There's no need for any higher and 275/40/20 are 106 which makes them very stiff and is half the reason people say 20's are too uncomfortable. If your wheels are not staggered and are 8.5 to 9.5" wide I'd 255/40/20 101 or 265/40/103 as above.

I'm on 255/40/20 101 Bridgestone Potenza Sport and lowered on Solow Low coilovers and the ride quality is ridiculously good

LV2's are staggered. 10j rear, 8.5j front, but you could use 265/40/20 on there with the 245/45/20 up front as long as its not 4Mo.

My rears have been fine tbh the front are also fine apart from on full lock when they rub. I do have a little tyre roll on fronts though so tightening front tyres up seems a sensible option. I’m a t28 150 DSG so no 4 motion. Thinking of going with either cross climates or pilot sports.

Slight mistake. T28 load rating is 100. T30 is 101.

I've done nearly 15k on my CC2's in 2 years+ they have been wonderful on every and any occasion. My wheels are staggered 8.5 on front and 10 on the back. As @Bigsidavies has said, 245/45 on the front and 275/40 on the back, perfick.
I just wish they would wear out, I want CC3's for Christmas! Perhaps next year...

Fab that’s what I will go with. I’ve normally had really good wear out of Michelin. All seasons fitted road x budget tyres still managed 25k on the rears though.. front still have meat on them.

Looking tonight for tyres the 275/40 are 106 load then the 245/45 are 103 load? Is it ok to mix the load levels front to back? stronger on the rear?

Any recommendations for where to buy CC2 or 3?

Absolutely fine to have the 106 load rated wider tyres on the rear and 103 load rated skinnier on the front. Just don't mix them up, so no tyre rotations like with normal car tyres where people swap fronts to back for even tyre wear.
If you carry a spare remember that is must be able to cover all 4 corners in the event of a puncture, ie not a tyre that has rotation/directional markings.
You must have a local tyre company of repute near you? Somewhere that can do a proper alignment?
I'm very lucky to have CRS on my doorstep and and Shenstone Trade Tyres 6 miles away. It was Steve @CRS Performance that recommended the CC2's in those particular sizes for staggered wheels.

245 45 20 is the size to put on the front , Leighton always for the wider tyre ??
