Hi guys, I've got a 17plate 204 biturbo, on Sunday I broke down, got the glow plug light flashing, loss of power black & white smoke coming out the back. These are the fault codes that come up. Am I looking at new turbo? Got it booked in with vw as under warreny but they can't get me in until end of April. Also attached video of the van smoking.

Can you post a link to the video clip?

oh, thats not looking good.

the DPF should be catching that black soot,

and the gas flow rate looks very low.

sound like its on the 2500rpm limiter for Park/neutral.

++++++++++

possible turbo issues, and down stream.

DPF and intercooler clogs/leaks are also possible.

any odd sounds from the engine bay?

OOI - yours is 2017, so what Warranty cover have you got? - All-In from VW?

It was in neutral in the video, no odd sounds that I've noticed.

We've got vw all components warranty. I've got in touch with the dealer that I brought it from to find out exactly what I'm covered with that warranty. My father in law has his own garage so worst case if the warranty doesn't cover me then I'll get him to do the work.

Keep us posted.

VW only sell/fit a new bi-turbo unit by all accounts.

That's £1500-2600 alone.

Then there's the dpf and intercooler that may need attention.

Plus labour. So let's hope the VW warranty covers it.

.

Can you get access to better scan data?

VCDS?

@mmi any input on the codes above?

I will do, hoping to hear back from dealer today in regards to warranty & expecting a phone call from jcb vw Sittingbourne too in regards to waiting time & 3 other vws can't get me in until the end of the April. I used the carly app (had it from previous bmw) my father in law plugged in his texa machine & brought up pretty much the same codes

I would guess the relevant with flashing glow plug light is P0299 00. The NOx-emission related codes P20EE and P204F can even be ancient ones - depending also on engine's software version.

In general P0299 00 - Boost Pressure Regulation - Control Range Not Reached

A lot more information is actually available from ECU. E.g. as below a capture by VCDS diagnostics tool.
Credit Ross-Tech Forum
Code:
5671 - Boost Pressure Regulation
          P0299 00 [101] - Control Range Not Reached
Not Confirmed - Tested Since Memory Clear
             Freeze Frame:
                    Fault Status: 00000001
                    Fault Priority: 2
                    Fault Frequency: 1
                    Mileage: 63915 km
                    Date: 2022.11.13
                    Time: 10:17:08

                    Engine RPM: 3323.00 /min
                    Normed load value: 73.3 %
                    Vehicle speed: 75 km/h
                    Coolant temperature: 78 °C
                    Intake air temperature: 13 °C
                    Ambient air pressure: 1010 mbar
                    Voltage terminal 30: 14.701 V
                    Unlearning counter according OBD: 40
Charge air pressure: specified value: 1582.50 hPa
Charge press. ctrl.: spec. value: 95.7 %
LDR Control deviation uncorrected mean value: 278.48 hPa
Duration of positive deviation of idle speed regulation: 6.05 s
                    Height correction: 1.00360
As the P-codes are generic OBD II-codes sometimes it would be beneficial to also have the actual VW-codes.
E.g. at least he following VW codes can be found mapped to the same P0299 00 code: 5171, 5671, 14914, 16683, 19225.

Little update, so we've disconnected the exhaust at the dpf. It has little power when you 1st statt accelerating then all of a sudden boosts & takes off

Only running on one turbo then..

Hi guys little update, after getting the van back on the 22nd June to have it back less than 24hours after having turbos done at vw I get the glow plug light flashing at me again.....vw assist out & dpf is knackered straight back to vw & now they are delivering the van back to me on Wednesday. New turbos, new egr, new dpf, new intercooler & egr cooler & crank shaft seal done as thag was leaking oil. Almost 3months after going initially into vw.

nice. . . any of that at your cost? - or all VW warranty?

fwiw - loads of post now abaout failed turbo will chuck oil into the exhaust and damage the DPF.

its a given that it will need cleaning/flushing or replacing.
