12,500 Miles....vw Service Or Oil Change?

Hi All,

My van dash is saying it will need a service in 500 miles. The clock is showing 12,500 miles currently.

What would you do? Take it to VW and get them to service it or take it to a good independent garage and get them to do an oil and filter change and then take it into VW in 8,000 miles time?

As far as I'm aware the van needs to go into VW for a service at 20,000 miles (or 2 years) to keep it within warranty, so my thinking was to get an oil change to last the next 8,000 miles and then go into VW for its first service.

Any advice is welcome. Thanks.

If it was me I'd opt for the easy life go to the VW dealer and smile while I get financially shafted.....
I'm carrying out my own interim engine oil & filter changes but for VW warranty potential hassle I would get the service done with them.
Just my 2p ;)

You can have a service at any place you choose as long as you use genuine vw service parts. I never have had mine serviced by dealers , i use the guys i no and trust to do the job correct and take care of my van. As long as you have the receipts to prove the parts and work for the service they can not refuse warranty work , if any should arise.

I agree but it's just a potential argument should the worst happen.

Go to independent garage who you trust.
Warranty is with VW not with a dealership. I never use vw for anything. Even warranty repairs it's still cheaper to pay out of my own pocket instead of waiting weeks for vw to even look at the van.

I used to get my old Subaru serviced at a Motorsports specialist instead of the hopeless main dealer, they were half the cost and twice as good.

I had some warranty issues that Subaru tried to wriggle out of, but they relented when I could prove the service work was done to their standards using genuine manufacturer parts.

But, I got a good kick in the nadgers when I tried to p/x it for another Subaru because it didn't have main dealer history.

My point being, just be aware of the residuals should you want to p/x the bus at a main dealers in future.

I totally agree about taking it to a good and trusted independent but my worry is always that if there is a 50/50 warranty claim then I would guess that having has VWFSH then there is more chance of the claim being successful.
This was the case for me a few years ago when my A6 MMI unit failed, car was out of warranty and Audi paid for a new one to tune of about 3.5k because it had AudiSH.
If this wasn't an issue I would always take it to an independent.
@StudleyGlass Do you mind me asking where you take yours as your local?

My 1st oil service is due in 900 miles which takes the van to 9000 miles and 6 months old. Called the dealer and he said the oil service isnt due until 20k or 2 years.
I thought it was soon at 9k and he said that loads of vans are not calibrated when they should be at PDI stage. He said that the PDI should calibrate the display and as such it should display whats actually required and not what the system is being fooled into displaying..anyone heard of this? Why would he not want the business of the oil service?
Any thoughts or experiences?
Cheers.

Sounds like a way to make a quick few quid. Always wondered why some had oil changed at such low mileage now there are all these fancy new LL oils kicking about

Quite the opposite though, they said the service wasnt due hence turning away the business...when the display says it is??

My van is two years this month and done 13k, came up on display inspection. Phoned stealer and told me doesn't need full 20k service just an oil change and inspection ........

I had the same problem, 9000 miles from new & asking for a service. I called the dealer & he said it was wrong & they would reset the service interval if I called in. I intend keeping the van long term & had intended having an intermediate oil change anyway. I asked the dealer for a price & he quoted me £140 for an oil & filter change, so I went ahead & had it done. Peanuts in the big scheme.

How old is it, as some leave the factory with service light set to 12 months, should be 24 and around 36k on long life servicing.

Hi all

My van is now at 10,800 miles with service clock saying next service due 1,700 miles so around 12,500 miles equates to first service, is this correct

Just coming up to 2 years roughly 14,500 and the service indicator showed up.

Is the service indicator not set to 20k miles or two years which ever comes first?

Mine came up with the service reminder pretty much bang on 12500. Goes in 5th to VW in Sheffield

Called local garage to book a 1st service over the Xmas period, when I gave the lady my mileage she replied by saying was I sure I was wanting an early service then explained that its 1st service was due 20K (long service schedule) and to call in and they would set the clock if I wanted.

I bought some oil recently so may well just change over Xmas myself anyway
