£2600 for clutch??

Had to get breakdown to rescue me the other day when the clutch went (goes down but not back up, oil leaking out when refilling). Taken to an RAC approved garage as I was 150 miles from home and had no idea where would be good or bad. Quote back from garage was £2600 for the parts and labour. Seems way more than what I'm seeing elsewhere now on forums etc but happy to be told that's correct. For a T6 T32

LUK Clutch kit, LUK Flywheel, Flywheel Bolt, Front Stabiliser link coming in just over £1000, then just over £1500 for estimated 14hrs labour

jeez. . .

well if the peddles gone,

then the clutch slave cylinder will be goosed.

so you would need the 3 part clutch kit.

(pressure plate, friction plate, release bearing.)

and then the hydraulic clutch slave cylinder,

and new brake/clutch fluid.

++++++++++++++

but not sure why you have a new DMF flywheel listed and new bolts?

is yours making noise or failing? rattling in natural?

this will be half the price id imagine..

and yes its good practice to replace as the whole gearbox has to come out.

+++++++++++++

but if you wanted a quick DOOFER job then you could possibly leave the DMF for another day?

+++++++++++++

thats why the cost and time his higher than expected.

I suppose it depends on how many miles it's done on that DMF, if it's done more than 50K I'd get it changed while it's apart and just suck up the expense, although the price quoted still seems excessive to me.

When I had this happen on my Seat Alhambra I was told the DMF required replacement due to contamination that they ‘can’t guarantee to completely remove’ which can then affect the new clutch.

Therefore they wouldn’t warranty the job if the DMF wasn’t replaced.

Make of that what you like, but it cost me a similar amount on that car 5+ years ago

sounds plausible . . .

if the oil got into the DMF and they couldn't clean it all out effectively.

A bog standard clutch/flywheel replacement takes 6 hours, parts £600, and an indy would charge around £400 labour.
Not sure what extra work above this your van needs but it looks like you're being charged dealer prices there where labour is over £100 ph. God only knows what the other 8 hours labour they're quoting you is for?

Here’s the quote. Discount was applied because I showed them the same parts for cheaper elsewhere lol

It looks like they are pricing the DMF and Clutch renewal as individual jobs when in fact they are both done at the same time.
Should be no more than 7 hours work.
You might want to point out that they are not renewing the ARB, they are removing and reinstalling it.

In old money that's called taking the p1ss.
Honestly I can't deal with such dishonest establishments.
@matt_ew I hope you will ask them how it takes 6 hours to change the flywheel when the clutch is already being changed.

What he said....

Once the gearbox is out, it's a few bolts to drop the flywheel... Half hours work.

Even if you round it up to an hour.

...

So may be call two other local companies and get a quote for the same work and see what you get back.

Id assume the parts will be roughly the same, but labour hours may be much less.

I've seen the YouTube guy do it on the floor at your home in under half a day.

.

Some good timing here, at least for the perspective of price comparison.

This evening I've picked up my T6 4motion from a local garage after having:

-Flywheel
-Clutch plate
-Slave master
-Fuel pressure sensor
-Fuel filter
-AC recharge
-AUX belt
-Wheel alignment

The whole lot - including parts and labour - £2250.

They're quoting over £1100 for a clutch and flywheel? Autodoc prices are <£600 and even ECP price is £720 after the current 10% discount so even with their generous £240 discount they're still pulling your pants down on parts alone, just not quite as far, and like others have mentioned, it's only 7 hours max to change the clutch AND flywheel. It's not 2 seperate jobs!
By the fek. If someone handed me a quote like that I would be reporting them to trading standards. They wouldn't have a leg to stand on.
Get a quote elsewhere and tell them your gonna get the van towed there instead as it will work out cheaper even with additional tow charges.

I had my slave cylinder go August 2022 and Jct600 vw van centre Hull quoted £1130.00 with new clutch
But ended up getting it done free through good will van had only done 36k miles 6 years old but also had a new one on order which may have helped

I had the slave cylinder plus clutch and DMF replaced on mine, I think for about £1100 all in, completed in under a day. Over £2k sounds like they are making hay while the sun shines off your misfortune

This is not good for him.

He's 150 miles from home and towed to that garage after breaking down.

(I wonder if that's why the garage has go in heavy on the quote?. (Captive audience) Though agree that charging a second lot of dmf labour for the same job is deffo sketchy and bordering on fraud, if not just deception.)

So it's not like he can just drive away......

But.

If he gets a much cheaper quote else where, they may be able to offer transport the van to there garage as part of the deal.... Even if it's £200 to move the van, it may be cheaper overall.

Haha, elephant and castle in London. After waiting 28 hours to be recovered I didn’t want to go through it all again
Well if I lived in Londonium I'd happily come tow ya to my local garage but I live in yorkshire where everything is cheap.

My clutch on my KIA is getting replaced on friday (no fly wheel) the clutch kit is £220 and the labour 4hrs. £540 total inc VAT - I would hope to not be paying much more than double for a van... this price you have been quoted scares the bejesus oit of me.

They are having your pants down because they know you are stranded. As a matter of principal I’d be going elsewhere no matter how much trouble it was.
Some garages have the ability to recover a vehicle to their own garage and won’t charge the same mileage rate as a stand alone recovery service. My local garage picked my Audi up a few years ago when the oil pump went and I know it was only 6 miles, but they didn’t charge me.
It’s just going to be a pita to find someone who can do the job at a fair price, in a reasonable time frame and be able to collect the van.

There are a few garages not a million miles away that may be worth a look..
As @Dellmassive said, even if recovery there costs a few hundred, it may still work out cheaper.

Try Dave Webster who runs Audi VW Specialist in Leatherhead. Top guy. Has a Caravelle himself. Honest and reliable.

Never used this garage but was recommended by a few people. Garage owner driving t6. Croydon based.
