You're quite right about the wiggles showing when the Ablemail is doing it's thing - once to hold the starter at 12.3V, then stopped when the leisure battery dropped below 13V, and then started again when the starter reached 12.1V, until such time when presumably the leisure battery was too low...
I need to upgrade my leisure battery, as it's a lowly 80ah gel jobbie, and I could do with something a bit beefier. The starter is 70ah but that seems to be fine so it can stay.
I fancy a LifePO4 as the leisure battery. But can they be mixed and can the ah be different? I seem to remember...
In all likelihood the factory fusing/cabling will be sufficient as that thing can swing some serious current given it just wires the starter/leisure batteries in parallel when the relay is closed (i.e. when the engine is running).
...interesting. The DC-DC charger does obviously charge the leisure battery from the (smart) alternator when conditions suit (once the starterbattery is fully charged, according to the manual), so I'd guessed a mains charger connected to the starterbattery would also eventually trigger that...
There’s nothing really to be gained in switching over to the starter when driving, I’d just wire it into the leisure battery like normal - your DC-DC should power it anyway when driving.
The BM2 battery monitor default SOC chart is for a flooded cell battery and gives a false reading for an AGM battery. I’m assuming your starter is an AGM. You can adjust the default SOC chart to suit your battery. Also don’t forget that a stop/start battery will generally only be around 80%...
Unfortunately, this is the new norm - modern vehicles have so many components and systems drawing power, even when they're sat apparently dormant, that the starterbattery is quickly drained.
Hi all,
Got a 2019 T6, original battery and its been playing up for a while. Last few weeks its taking longer to crank, not much but enough to be slightly embarrasing if it churns away for 5-10 seconds before biting. It's got a fair bit running off of it now like trackers and alarms...
It is a much discussed subject. A search will be useful, here’s a starter for 10:-

Our Renogy DCC50S has two inputs, one from the starterbattery and one from the solar panels.
The starterbattery won't charge the leisure battery unless the engine is running and the smart alternator is producing an high enough voltage to do the trick.
I've got a standalone Victron smart...
So literally the next unit behind the seat
I’d say approx 400 mm longer than if they were under the seat.
Approx run to starterbattery around 3m?
What ya thinking ?
Thank you
...Transporter with a factory leisure battery. I was working on my van earlier today and had the passenger seat out to lay a cable to my starterbattery (not connected). When I put everything back together, seatback in and connected up the leisure battery, I'm getting a heap of errors when I...
Most standard setups don’t have anything to maintain the starterbattery, which is then easily flattened by things like opening the doors as this wakes up the van’s electrics.
There is a wonderful gizmo called an Ablemail AMT-12-2, which trickle charges the starterbattery from a healthy...
Most people normally use the hole in the bulkhead behind the starterbattery.
Got a few pics of what you have ?

My starterbattery was not holding charge. Charged to 70% quickly when engine running but within hrs was down to 17%. Late 2023 with 12,000 miles of long journeys so not an old battery. Bought a yuasa replacement from GSF for £121 on offer with a 4 year warranty. Bit of a pain to swap over but...
Although it seems like you've eliminated the faulty battery as the cause, by replacing it with a new one, does it still start better if you've got it wired up to a charger set to "start"?
Is the new battery fully charged? (they often aren't)
This time of year we often use heated seats, heated...
