I’ve haven’t heard of it being an issue with a CFCA, I’ve got approx’ 56K miles on mine without issues. Possibly because there may be less vibration than other engines due to the balancer shafts.
If you’ve had an engine rebuild the leakage could be elsewhere, best find it sooner than later.

So had the front egr pipe changed today ( as well as clutch and dual mass flywheel) and has made no difference to the loud whistle I’m getting.
When changed they checked the pipe work around it and all seemed fine. Do you think it could be the rear pipe? The thing is there is no...
oil level was way too high, - maybe it was overfilled, thats an easy fix. which you done. ( cheap easy fix, but keep an eye on the level to make sure its not going up again, from coolant or diesel in the oil, what the water level too.)

MY16 T6 has quite a few different engines.
...come up on the dashboard at the same time as the whoosh. It then stays on continually until the ignition is turned off.

Thanks for this info, its definitely useful info. What you mention is basically my setup in Southern Africa - Very reliable. Europe, I see as far more developed so getting parts couriered is quick, easy and affordable.

Maybe it's not your van or coming from outside in? If you have window ajar and another van is using their diesel heater it wouldn't take much for your own fumes or theirs to seep back in, if you're down wind from someone else or a still night for your own fumes. If any of that makes sense
