Hi ya. Hope you don't mind me giving you a nudge on this old thread. Got a similar issue. Intermittent P0401. Can do a few 100 miles till it pops on again. Did you replacement EGR solve the issue?
My van is in limp mode, no dash warning lights. Diagnostics said needed new EGR. I had an aftermarket, non VW, EGR fitted however the diagnostics have stated the EGR still needs replacing, and it is still in limp mode. Again no warning lights. Different garage did second diagnostics. The second...
Check EGR rear and front pipes for splits or leaks, very common. Here’s a search on forum regarding the pipes: Search results for query: egr pipe

No other faults or issues...

I'm afraid the Santa doesn't understand the issue because in his sledge the EGR cooler is bypassed during the season.

I had the same code recently, garage I took the van to reckoned readings didn’t suggest a clogged EGR, on further investigation he found a split in the EGR to exhaust manifold rear pipe which he replaced along with new gaskets. He did show me the part complete with split.
Time will tell but so...
To conclude this post/issue...

Removed the old unit, separated the cooler and rigged up a bench test: it failed: it was leaking somewhere inside.
Rebuilt the...
