1) It does not need to be a detachable towbar but will need coding and interfacing correctly to let the van know you have a trailer\bike carrier attached once you connect the electrics plug. It also enables the bulb out detection for the attached unit.

That's an interesting one. The above is gateway's view who should be on the CANbus(es). I guess the HBA is now listed in the gateway's installation list thus gateway knows whom to look for.
Anyways, VCDS uses the gateway installation list to access...
I get it now, not sure there is an easy way to interface that, it would be simple to connect up the lock/unlock signal as that is a simple electric signal to initiate but that wouldn’t set/unset the alarm
The keyfob goes direct to the BCM so not sure what you could do to interface the alarm...
