It's an option, my dealer was unsure and unconvincing when questioned, however if you use CarPlay or app connect you don't need it, a long press of the button does the car play activation instead.

Think you would be limited to external device or aftermarket stereo. Dealers are saying app connect cannot be retro activated but i think that will change in time so could explore that route in the future
