Accepted method is to fit charger to leisure battery, and use something similar to an Ablemail AMT-12 to maintain the starter battery. This method prioritises the LB over the SB. Which is what you need.
If you have solar + LB, then fit an Ablemail AMT12-2. It'll trickle charge your SB via the solar and you won't have to ever worry about your SB over the winter months.
Slight thread revival, but I have bought an AMT-12 to try and stop the start battery drain in my T6.1. I have a 250w solar panel with Victron controller, Sterling Power BB1230 charger, and a Renogy lithium leisure battery.
The solar controller and leisure battery are under the driver's seat...
Today I’ve bought the 2 year all-in service plan that’s currently on offer, a USB socket (of the CBE variety) and some spade connectors so I can install the AMT-12 I ordered last weekend.
I definitely don’t have a growing pile of things waiting to be installed 🙈
Most people with a leisure battery are now using the able mal AMT12-2. Trickle charger.
That will trickle charge your starter battery by taking power from the leisure battery.
Depending on the size of your leisure battery you can get months of starter battery charge.
I’m willing to stand corrected, but I don’t think you can charge both batteries with one mains charger with that setup. I would connect the charger to the leisure battery and then fit something like an AMT12 to trickle the starter battery from the now fully charged leisure battery.
Mine is a different set up to most of you. It's a T5.1 so standard lead acid for the starter and an AGM for the leisure battery. 160W solar charging the leisure battery and an AMT-12 for maintaining the starter. Even with a different set up it shows that the AMT-12 is doing its thing. I would...
Upgrading the original AMT12-2 non BT with the BT version so I can make some changes easily! Need to reduce the LB cut off under 13v so it doesn't stop doing its thing during these times of darkness! Anyone fancy an original AMT12-2?!

Majority on here go for the Ablemail AMT12 (I think that's the one I have).
Yes, can connect to the existing positive.
No, don't need a diode, they all have them built in.
