A bit late seeing this, but I’ve just done a similar thing. Not as bad as yours.....but....as it’s stretch carpet I pulled (ripped) the carpet back off the metal a good few inches back then spent time force stretching the carpet to make it longer then covered the window and applied spray glue. Hey presto, there’s now enough carpet to go behind the metal.
